E-05-08 is untouched in refs/takes/, the bucket and the gallery, and stays the record of the take it was; it is still the E-05 in evening-scene-13 and in the approved evening-scene-14, SO THE REEL AND THE SHOT NOW DISAGREE -- as they did over M-12 on 9 Sep, and the fix is the same, rebuilding the reel on the approved take. DEFECTS CARRIED IN, all recorded before and none fixed here: (1) the E-01 flare is still mix B (with the synthesized whoomph) and still disagrees with the approved E-01 take, which carries mix A -- inherited unbroken since evening-scene-03 on 14 Sep; (2) E-05-08's windows carry a blue-grey glow where its prompt asked for black night glass, as E-05-06's did; (3) E-05-08's German mishears "die Feder von der Hand" as something closer to "die Fenna von der Mann"; (4) inherited unread from -09: E-02-05, E-03-01 and E-04-01 have not had the enlarged text-surface pass for the number. E-05-08 has: read over a six-frame contact sheet it carries no text surface at all, so no letterform and no numeral appears in it. Live-action documentary footage, a printing shop in Wittenberg, Germany, late June 1539, after the day's work is over. Photorealistic 35mm film, fine grain in the shadows, muted earthy colour. Night interior. ONE CANDLE IS THE ONLY LIGHT IN THE ROOM — a single tall tallow candle standing on the long oak table, burning steadily, its light falling off steeply so that the table is warm and the shop around it goes to darkness within a few feet. The small leaded windows read as near-black glass and throw no light, no glow and no pale patch onto the walls, the presses, the floor or the table. Shallow depth of field, the lens wide open on the one flame. REAL TIME. 180-degree shutter, the footage playing at ordinary speed from the first frame to the last, one continuous take, no cut, no time jump, no slow motion and no speed ramp. The shot is unhurried because ONE THING HAPPENS IN IT. THE SUBJECT OF THIS SHOT IS THE TABLE — the long oak table, the day's work lying all over it, and the bare boards that are left when that work is taken off. The table is what the frame is about from the first second to the last. THERE IS EXACTLY ONE PERSON IN THIS PICTURE AND THERE IS NO SECOND PERSON. He is THE APPRENTICE, and he is alone in the shop. No other figure of any kind appears anywhere in the room at any point: no second boy, no workman, no master, no onlooker, no partly-seen person at an edge of the frame or in a doorway or behind a press. Nobody comes in and nobody speaks. THE APPRENTICE, exactly as his character reference sheet: a lean boy in his mid teens, copper-red hair cut close to the head, a fair freckled face with sandy brows, his face clean of ink, both lower arms lampblacked from wrist to elbow with his hands and nails blackened, a cream linen shirt with the sleeves rolled above the elbow, a brown leather apron with crossed straps, pale undyed hose. He is tired and he is working at the ordinary unhurried rate of a boy doing the last job of the day. WHERE HE STANDS: at the long side of the oak table, in the candle's light, with the dark shop behind him. His feet do not travel. He stands in the one place for the whole shot and does not walk out of frame, cross the room, or step away. WHAT IS ON THE TABLE AT THE START, spread down its length in the candlelight and reaching to the near edge of the picture: a wooden composing stick, a shallow galley tray of set metal type, two or three loose printed sheets lying flat, a wooden mallet and a planer block, a leather ink ball on its turned wooden handle lying on its side, a horn cup, a folded coarse cloth, a scatter of loose metal sorts. It is the litter of a working day and it covers most of the boards. AND ONE THING MORE, AND IT IS THE POINT OF THE SHOT: A SINGLE SHEET OF CRUMPLED PAPER LIES ON THE TABLE BESIDE THE CANDLE. It is a letter, opened and crushed in a fist earlier in the day and dropped there, cream rag paper gone soft and creased into deep folds, lying where it fell with its corners standing up off the wood. It carries a few short lines of brown ink in a fast sixteenth-century German hand, sloping and close-written, and at this distance and in this light it reads as a few dark strokes on pale paper and not as readable words. WHAT THE APPRENTICE DOES, and it is the whole action of the shot and the only thing that happens in it: HE CLEARS THE DAY'S WORK OFF THE TABLE IN ONE MOVEMENT, AND HE LEAVES THE CRUMPLED LETTER LYING WHERE IT IS. 1. FIRST THIRD — he leans in over the table with both blackened forearms and gathers the litter toward himself: the composing stick, the mallet, the planer block, the ink ball, the horn cup, the cloth and the loose sorts all come together into one heap against his chest, dragged across the wood with a low wooden rumble. His hands travel around the crumpled letter and go on either side of it. 2. MIDDLE THIRD — he takes the heap up against his chest in both arms in one lift, holding it there, and turns from the waist to his left. 3. LAST THIRD — he sets the whole armload down out of the candle's light, onto the bench at the end of the table, and straightens up with his empty hands hanging. The boards in front of him are bare. THE CRUMPLED LETTER STAYS EXACTLY WHERE IT WAS ALL THROUGH THIS. It is in the same place on the table in the first frame and in the last, beside the candle, still crumpled and still lying as it fell. His hands go around it, his arms pass over it without touching it, it is not gathered up, not straightened, not smoothed, not folded, not picked up and not moved an inch. He is not looking at it and he does not read it — he clears the table around it the way a tired boy clears around a thing that is not his to move. HE DOES ONE PASS, NOT SEVERAL: the litter comes together, goes up into his arms and goes down on the bench, once, and that is the end of it. He does not come back for a second armload, does not wipe the boards, and does not pick anything else up. THE PLACE, exactly as the set reference: a low timber-framed workshop under heavy squared oak ceiling beams, walls of cracked lime plaster, a plank floor worn pale down the lanes where the men walk. The long oak table runs down the middle of the light. Beyond the candle's reach the shop is dark shapes only — two heavy wooden hand-presses standing silent, a row of aprons hung on hand-forged iron pegs, sloping racks of type in shadow, the empty drying cords high under the beams as bare lines. Nothing in the dark is lit and nothing in the dark moves. CAMERA: ONE SLOW PUSH DOWN THE LENGTH OF THE TABLE THAT TIGHTENS ONTO THE BARE BOARDS AND THE LETTER, no cuts and no reframe, at one steady unhurried walking pace. The table and the candle are in frame from the first second and they get larger the whole way through: the shot closes in, it never opens out. THE LAST FRAME OF THIS SHOT IS THE POINT OF IT, and the move is built to arrive there and hold. THE FRAME ENDS ON THE CLEARED TABLE: an arm's length of bare oak boards in the candlelight, the tallow candle standing at the left of the picture with its flame steady, and THE CRUMPLED LETTER LYING ALONE ON THE EMPTY WOOD BESIDE IT — the only object left on the table and the only thing in the frame that is sharp. The boy is out of the picture but for a dark edge of his shoulder and his hanging hand at the top of the frame, unlit. Nothing else is on the boards. IT BEGINS as a medium-wide from the near end of the table at chest height, lens level, looking down the length of the boards with the day's litter spread across them in the near ground and the boy behind it, the candle burning halfway down the table and the dark shop falling away past him. THE CAMERA GETS THERE EARLY AND THEN STOPS MOVING. The push is finished by two thirds of the way through the shot; from that point on THE CAMERA IS STILL, holding the bare boards, the candle and the letter, and it does not move again while he sets the armload down and straightens. The last part of this shot is a still camera and a still table. The camera does not cut, does not reverse, does not pull back, does not widen and does not rise or fall. SOUND: the low wooden rumble of tools and loose metal dragged across oak boards, the small hard clatter of the armload going down on the bench, the boy's breath, his apron creaking as he straightens, one shoe shifting on the plank floor. Under it the silence of a big empty timber room at night and the faint crackle of the candle wick. No music, no speech, no other footsteps, no press. Lit by one candle alone. The frame holds only wood, leather, wool, linen, paper, stone, clay tile and hand-forged iron, worn and unpainted; the plaster of the walls, the squared oak of the beams and the cloth the boy wears are plain, carrying their own weathering and nothing else. The words in this film are the shop's own work and they belong in frame: dense blackletter on the printed sheets, a fast brown chancery hand on the letter, German wherever a word is read at all.
